  • The extremely large trunk of a fallen maple tree is sawed in two, the top half being pulled out of the way so the bottom half can be rolled to a portable saw mill where the log will be cut for its lumber Saturday, May 1, 2010. The entire trunk is estimated to weight over four tons. The bottom of the log was sealed after being cut down to prevent moisture from leaving the tree too quickly causing checking or splitting of the wood.

  • 9-year-olds Sophie Woode and Trinity Sossong play on the corner of Grand Island Ave and College Street Wednesday afternoon. The Westlawn Elementary students decided while playing that they should raise money for a good cause. "By one get one free" sang the children as cars drove past. While they didn't raise much money or decide who to give it to, their school and the Central Nebraska Humane Society were two ideas, they had fun. (Independent/Matt Dixon)
