  • An estimated 600 volunteers participated in packaging meals for Feed My Starving Children over several packing sessions like this one. Feed My Starving Children is Christian organization based in Minnesota that helps feed starving children around the world. Meals are packaged by volunteers and paid for through donations. FMSC has four permanent packaging sites but also a mobile pack program. Here, a mobile pack site uses the facilities at Portal Industries in Grafton.

The traveling choir consists of orphans, mostly from Liberia and Peru, and seeks to to increase awareness to the plight of orphaned and high risk children around the world while breaking the cycle of poverty through education. The choir was created by the International Children's Network, a non-profit whose main purpose is to provide access to education for orphans and high risk children and teens around the world.   • 9-year-olds Sophie Woode and Trinity Sossong play on the corner of Grand Island Ave and College Street Wednesday afternoon. The Westlawn Elementary students decided while playing that they should raise money for a good cause. "By one get one free" sang the children as cars drove past. While they didn't raise much money or decide who to give it to, their school and the Central Nebraska Humane Society were two ideas, they had fun. (Independent/Matt Dixon)

  • Lee McComb of Grand Island chats with Andy Enevoldsen also of Grand Island infront of McComb's 1099 Chevrolet Caprice Sport Coupe during the 40th Annual Tri-City Street Rods Auto Exhibition Saturday at the State Fair Exhibition Building in Grand Island. "I Spent a lot of time on this thing" said McComb who originally purchased the car new in 1966. He relocated the car in 1989 after selling it 1969 when he and his wife began having children.   • Zombies roam the grounds during an Enchanted Halloween Trail event Friday evening at Crane Trust Nature & Vistor Center near Alda. The family friendly outdoor event featured costumed performers dressed as animals, a campfire, and candy. The enchanted trail will be held on Saturday from 2 p.m.  to 4 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 per person with children 3 and under admitted free. (Independent/Matt Dixon)

Witnesses said the man was drunk, took off his shoes, shirt and hat, climbed over the railing near the children's playground and jumped or fell in. Divers recovered his body after searching for sometime.

  • Documentary filmmaker John Sorensen and Ann coyne, with the Grace Abbott School of Social Work at University of Nebraska-Omaha address the audience before a showing of Sorensen's documentary film "The Quilted Conscience" Wednesday at The Grand Theatre. The film is about Sudanese-American refugees children and a quilt project that captures their dreams and memories while bringing them together with a quilter's guild of local white women and a famed African-American quilter.   • Matt Dixon | The Flint Journal..Siple Elementary second grader Serenity Ferrel couldn't resist putting her nose on a dot of chalk while visiting the Kitchen School in Davison Wednesday afternoon. What was once a form of punishment for talking in class, quickly became a hilarious source of entertainment for the children. Named after Silas Kitchen, an early homesteader of Davison, The Kitchen School is hosting a program for Davison elementary school students, providing a one-room school-house learning experience. The school was founded in 1847 and moved to this building, which has been restored to a 1940s state, sometime between 1867 and 1870.

The program helps pediatric patients cope with serious illness. Hurley is the only hospital in Michigan besides Children's Hospital in Detroit, offering this specialized program for pediatric patients, their families and the health care providers treating them.
