Officers Tyler Noel, right, and Wendy Piercy search a vehicle after responding to an assault call Thursday night in Grand Island. The Grand Island police department will be short handed for next 6 to 12 months. The department had planned on hiring 5 new officers in December but was only able to hire three. The hiring of the two remaining new officers, plus filling two existing positions that came open, will be delayed due to to a change in the training schedule at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center.
